Host materials and damage. Lyctidae primarily infest hardwoods such as oak, ash, walnut, acacia, and bamboo. They are notorious pests in residential and commercial settings, damaging parquet floors, antique furniture, structural beams, plywood, and various interior woodwork.
Biology and life cycle. Female beetles lay eggs into the open pores of the wood surface. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel deep into the timber, feeding on starch and creating a labyrinth of galleries. The life cycle duration varies significantly, ranging from a few months up to two years, depending on wood moisture levels and ambient temperature.
Damage and pest significance. The presence of the beetle is indicated by numerous small, circular emergence holes, usually 1–2 mm in diameter. Beneath the surface, the wood is reduced to a fine, flour-like powder. Over time, this structural degradation can compromise the integrity of the infested wooden elements, leading to costly repairs or total replacement.
Control measures. Preventive strategies include rigorous kiln-drying of timber and the application of chemical wood preservatives. If an infestation is detected, control options include structural fumigation, injecting insecticide solutions directly into the emergence holes, or professional deep-penetrating surface treatments with residual insecticides like permethrin.
