Microbiota decussata, commonly known as Siberian carpet cypress, is a rare conifer belonging to the Cupressaceae family. Native to the Sikhote-Alin mountain range in the Russian Far East, this plant is highly valued for its unique creeping growth habit and landscape versatility.

The plant thrives in moist, well-drained, acidic to neutral soil. Proper drainage is the most critical factor in its cultivation, as the roots are highly susceptible to rot if left in standing water. Incorporating organic matter into the soil helps retain necessary moisture while maintaining optimal aeration.

Microbiota performs best in partial shade to full shade environments. While it can tolerate sunny locations, intense afternoon sun can scorch the foliage and cause it to turn brown prematurely during the summer months.

As a hardy evergreen, it can withstand extreme winter temperatures. In autumn, the foliage transitions from its vibrant summer green to a brownish-bronze shade, which is a characteristic adaptation of the species to cold climates.

Maintenance involves routine pruning of dead or overgrown branches to maintain the desired shape and density. Regular mulching with wood chips or bark is highly recommended to protect the root system from temperature fluctuations and to conserve soil moisture.

Microbiota is generally resistant to most common garden pests and diseases. However, in poorly drained or overly humid conditions, the plant is prone to fungal infections such as root rot caused by Phytophthora species.

Early symptoms of fungal distress include discoloration of the needles and dieback of individual branches. If detected early, the application of fungicides and improvement of soil drainage can often save the plant.

Spider mites can occasionally infest the shrub during prolonged periods of drought or excessive heat. A simple way to manage this is by overhead irrigation or spraying the foliage with water to wash away the pests and increase local humidity.

Proper air circulation is the best preventive measure against pests and fungal pathogens. Avoid planting these shrubs too close to one another to ensure each plant receives sufficient airflow and light penetration.

Vigilant inspection during the spring transition is essential. Removing damaged tissue and cleaning the base of the plant prevents the accumulation of debris, which often serves as a breeding ground for harmful fungi.
