Rose family

The Damask rose (Rosa damascena) is a perennial shrub belonging to the Rosaceae family, primarily cultivated for the production of rose oil and rose water. It is a vital commercial crop, highly prized in the global fragrance and cosmetic industries for its exquisite fragrance and medicinal properties.

Originating from the Middle East, specifically regions of modern-day Iran and Syria, the Damask rose has spread throughout various temperate regions of the world. Key production hubs are now located in Bulgaria, Turkey, and India, where specific microclimates contribute to the unique chemical profile of the oil extracted from its petals.

Botanically, it is a deciduous shrub that can grow up to two meters in height. It features thorny stems and pinnate leaves. The flowers are typically pink, semi-double, and arranged in clusters. They are known for their high oil concentration compared to other rose species, making them the gold standard for distillation.

Cultivation requires well-drained, nutrient-rich soil and a climate with moderate humidity. Irrigation is essential during the budding stage to ensure high oil yields. Proper pruning practices are critical, as they promote bush rejuvenation and ensure that the plant redirects its energy into producing high-quality floral biomass.

The crop is susceptible to various fungal diseases, such as black spot and powdery mildew, which thrive in humid conditions. Pests like aphids, spider mites, and leaf-rolling caterpillars are common threats. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies are recommended to ensure sustainable yields while maintaining environmental quality.
