Beetles of the genus Trogoderma are members of the family Dermestidae, known for their ability to thrive in dry environments. Adults are small, typically 2 to 4 mm in length, and generally possess an oval shape with brownish or blackish coloring.
The larval stage is the most destructive phase of the life cycle. The larvae are covered in numerous stiff hairs, giving them a distinct fuzzy appearance, which is a key diagnostic feature for identification.
Their life cycle includes egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. In favorable conditions, they reproduce quickly, but they are most notorious for their ability to enter diapause, allowing them to survive for long periods without food or in harsh temperature conditions.
Trogoderma species are highly adaptable and often hide in deep cracks, crevices, or beneath surfaces, making visual detection of the adults extremely challenging for warehouse personnel.
Accurate identification often requires laboratory analysis or the use of specific monitoring tools, as several species within the Trogoderma genus look very similar and require professional entomological expertise to distinguish.
Trogoderma beetles are major pests of stored grains, including wheat, barley, maize, and rice. They cause significant damage to stored products by feeding on the germ, which effectively destroys the seed's viability.
Beyond whole grains, these pests are known to damage processed commodities such as flour, breakfast cereals, dried fruits, and various types of oilseeds and processed animal feeds.
The damage is often underestimated because the larvae penetrate deeply into the grain mass, eating the kernel from the inside out, often leaving only the empty shell behind.

Fumigation is the most common chemical control method for serious infestations. Using approved gases, such as phosphine, is effective at reaching pests deep within the grain mass where contact insecticides cannot penetrate.
Maintaining strict grain moisture standards is crucial; drier grain is naturally less conducive to the rapid proliferation of Trogoderma compared to moist commodities.
