Carabidae

Crops affected: This pest primarily targets winter cereals, especially winter wheat. It can also infest rye, barley, and occasionally oats. The damage is most severe in fields where cereal monoculture is practiced for consecutive years.

Biology and life cycle: The insect completes one generation per year. Development progresses through egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Larvae overwinter in the soil near the root zone of host plants, remaining active and feeding during mild weather conditions, which allows them to cause damage both in autumn and early spring.

Damage and pest status: Larvae feed on the leaves of young cereal plants, shredding them into fibrous remains which causes the plants to die. Adult beetles cause damage later in the season by feeding on the grains during the ripening stage, which directly impacts yield and reduces the quality of the harvest.

Protection measures: Effective management relies on a combination of cultural and chemical strategies:

  • Implementing crop rotation to disrupt the pest's life cycle.
  • Deep plowing to destroy larval habitats.
  • Seed treatment with systemic insecticides.
  • Application of foliar insecticides during the peak of larval emergence to prevent severe infestation.
