The host range of these insects is quite specific, with many species being host-specialized. While they do not consume large amounts of foliage like caterpillars, their ability to manipulate plant hormones to create galls can affect the health, vigor, and aesthetic appeal of their host plants, particularly in ornamental and forest settings.

The biology of Cynipidae involves a complex life cycle, often featuring alternating generations. Adult females lay eggs into plant tissue, and their secretions trigger the plant to produce a gall. This structure provides the developing larva with a stable microclimate and a concentrated food source, protecting it from both weather and many natural predators.

Damage caused by gall wasps manifests as various deformations on leaves, buds, and twigs. These galls can range from simple swellings to elaborate, multi-chambered structures. While a small number of galls is usually harmless, heavy infestations can cause stress to the tree, resulting in stunted growth, early leaf drop, and weakened structural integrity of young twigs.
