These insects are primarily associated with coniferous tree species. They target the larvae of wood wasps, known as Siricidae, which are significant pests of softwoods. Their lifecycle is closely tied to the presence of these hosts within the trunks of weakened or stressed trees, including spruce, fir, and pine, making them essential components of the forest regulatory system.

The development cycle of ibaliids consists of egg, larva, pupa, and adult stages. The female uses a specialized ovipositor to penetrate tree bark and deposit eggs near the larvae of wood wasps. The resulting ibaliid larva acts as a parasite, feeding on the host and eventually killing it. This process effectively reduces the pest pressure exerted by Siricidae on coniferous forests.

The "damage" caused by these insects is not direct to the timber but is tied to the imbalance of the forest ecosystem. If the population of Ibaliidae declines, the density of wood wasps increases rapidly. This leads to extensive tunneling inside the timber, which significantly degrades wood quality and can result in the mortality of young trees and saplings in nurseries.

Protective measures are focused on preserving natural biodiversity rather than eradication. Because ibaliids are natural regulators, the indiscriminate use of broad-spectrum insecticides is highly discouraged, as it disrupts the biological control chain. Maintaining tree vigor and conducting selective sanitation harvesting are the most effective strategies to manage populations of wood-boring pests while allowing beneficial parasitoids to thrive.
