Ensign wasps
Ensign wasps (Evaniidae) are a family of parasitoid wasps that are frequently misidentified as agricultural pests due to their somewhat alarming appearance. In reality, they are beneficial insects, acting as natural biological control agents against cockroaches. They belong to the order Hymenoptera, and they pose no threat to agricultural crops, fruit trees, or vegetable gardens.

The systematic classification of these insects places them within the superfamily Evanioidea. Their common name, "ensign wasp," refers to their habit of bobbing their abdomen up and down, which resembles a signaling flag. This distinct appearance is their defining characteristic, often leading to confusion for farmers who assume any unusual insect in the field must be a pest that requires eradication.
The biology and life cycle of the Evaniidae are strictly tied to their host, the cockroach. An adult female wasp uses its ovipositor to insert a single egg into a cockroach ootheca (egg case). The wasp larva then consumes the cockroach eggs from within, eventually pupating inside the ootheca and emerging as an adult wasp, effectively neutralizing the pest population.
Regarding their impact on crops, these wasps have zero pest status. They do not feed on plant tissues, do not transmit plant diseases, and do not cause any form of damage to agricultural production. Labeling them as a pest is a common misconception that does not align with their ecological role as specialized parasitoids of cockroaches.
For agricultural management, no control measures against Evaniidae are necessary or recommended. In fact, their presence is beneficial as they assist in reducing cockroach populations around farms and storage facilities. Encouraging the survival of these wasps is an example of integrated pest management (IPM), as they provide free, natural control services without any chemical intervention.
