Leafcutting bees
These bees frequently target various ornamental and garden plants. Roses are the most common hosts, but their activities are also observed on lilacs, hydrangeas, maples, and a variety of fruit-bearing trees and vegetables, depending on the availability of suitable nesting materials.
The biology of these insects is quite precise: the female uses her mandibles to cut perfectly circular or oval sections from leaves. These pieces are carried to a tunnel or cavity, where they are used to create layers of protective cells, which are then provisioned with nectar and pollen.
The damage caused by leafcutting bees is primarily aesthetic. The leaves exhibit clean, scalloped edges or perfectly round holes. While this defoliation generally does not kill the plant, it can be problematic for nurseries or high-value ornamental gardens where plant appearance is critical.
Control strategies should be balanced with the ecological benefits of these bees as pollinators.
