Notodontid moths

Notodontid moths are primarily recognized as pests of trees and shrubs. They affect a wide range of host plants, including fruit trees, poplars, and various deciduous forest species. The larvae are often host-specific, and their presence can lead to significant economic damage in forestry and agricultural settings where foliage health is critical for plant vigor.

The life cycle involves complete metamorphosis, with most species overwintering as pupae in the soil or within protected cocoons among leaf litter. Once the adults emerge, mating occurs, and eggs are laid on the host plant leaves. The larvae, which are the main destructive stage, often possess distinct physical features such as humps or hair-like protrusions.

The primary damage is caused by the larvae consuming large amounts of leaf tissue. Depending on the density of the infestation, a population of Notodontidae can result in partial or total defoliation of the host tree. This physiological stress restricts the plant's ability to photosynthesize, often leading to reduced fruit production, stunted growth, and susceptibility to secondary infections.

Effective pest management strategies depend on early detection and integrated control. Cultural practices, such as maintaining soil health and removing debris around the base of trees, can reduce overwintering populations. When outbreaks occur, target-specific insecticides or biological control agents, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, are recommended to minimize environmental impact while protecting the crops.
