These insects primarily damage leguminous plants such as beans, soybeans, peas, lentils, and alfalfa. The larvae are specialized feeders that target the reproductive stages of the plant, often causing economic damage by reducing seed quality and quantity through direct consumption of developing tissues.
The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically laid on floral buds or young pods. Once the larvae emerge, they bore into the fruit to feed on the internal seeds, making them difficult to detect and control once they have entered the plant tissue.
The damage caused by these pests includes hollowed-out seeds and pod deformation. The entry holes created by larvae often serve as infection courts for secondary fungal and bacterial pathogens, leading to rotting and loss of the grain in storage. In severe infestations, total yield loss in individual fields is possible.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, planting early-maturing varieties, and timely harvesting are critical. Chemical control is utilized when populations exceed established economic thresholds, focusing on applying contact or systemic insecticides during the peak flowering stage.
