True crickets
True crickets are polyphagous and known to feed on a wide variety of plant materials. They frequently damage seedlings of vegetable crops, such as tomatoes and peppers, as well as emerging cereals and oilseed crops. By consuming seeds and tender cotyledons, they can severely compromise plant stands, necessitating expensive replanting if infestations are heavy.
The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis, moving from egg to nymph and then to adult stage. Females typically lay eggs in moist soil, where they may undergo diapause to survive winter. The nymphs, which look like miniature adults, are active feeders. Their development rate is highly dependent on environmental temperature and soil moisture levels, with peak activity occurring during warmer months.
The damage caused by crickets is primarily mechanical. They use their strong mandibles to cut through stems at the soil surface, causing seedlings to collapse and die. They also scrape plant surfaces and devour germinating seeds. Because they are nocturnal and hide in soil cracks or debris during the day, damage is often observed only after significant stand loss has already occurred.
Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as maintaining field hygiene and removing debris minimize habitat availability. Deep plowing can disrupt the soil where eggs are deposited. For severe outbreaks, the use of poisoned baits containing approved insecticides is often the most effective strategy, as these baits target the pests during their active nocturnal feeding hours.
