The host range of these insects is remarkably broad, including various vegetable crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and various beans. Additionally, they are known to attack ornamental plants, causing significant economic losses in the floriculture industry by reducing the aesthetic value and vitality of the plants.

The biology of Agromyzidae involves a metamorphosis cycle from egg to larva, pupa, and adult. Females puncture the leaf surface to lay eggs, and the emerging larvae begin feeding on the palisade parenchyma. This mining behavior creates specific patterns that are characteristic of the species, followed by pupation, which may occur either on the leaf surface or within the soil.

Damage caused by leafminers is twofold. Firstly, the larval mining action destroys photosynthetic tissue, which weakens the plant and stunts its growth. Secondly, the feeding punctures made by adult flies and the tunnels created by larvae can serve as entry points for secondary bacterial or fungal pathogens, leading to further tissue necrosis and plant decay.

Effective management requires an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) approach. This includes the use of sticky yellow traps for early detection and population reduction, as well as maintaining rigorous sanitation practices to eliminate weeds that serve as alternative hosts. When biological control with parasitoids is insufficient, target-specific systemic insecticides can be applied to mitigate severe outbreaks.
