BROAD-SPECTRUM ORGANOPHOSPHORUS INSECTICIDE
Active ingredient
fenitrothion, 500 g/l
Formulation
Sumithion 50% EC — emulsifiable concentrate
Base unit:
5 L.
Sumithion is an organophosphorus insecticide, highly effective against a wide spectrum of insects belonging to the families Lepidoptera, Diptera, Orthoptera, Hemiptera and Coleoptera, due to its high contact and stomachic insecticidal activity.
After spraying, Sumithion rapidly penetrates plant tissues and is gradually metabolized within them, but upward translocation is not pronounced.
External irritants are perceived by receptor cells or sensory organs of insects, and the signal is transmitted via nerves to the central nervous system. Impulses reaching the endings of nerve fibers are chemically transmitted by acetylcholine to muscles, glands and other nerve cells. This transmission occurs across the synapse — a very narrow space between nerve cells and receptor tissues. If acetylcholine reaches the receptor, it is inactivated by the enzyme acetylcholinesterase.
Sumithion acts as an enzyme inhibitor. This leads to prolonged stimulation of the receptor tissue and, consequently, to damage of the nervous system, causing the insect to die quickly.
APPLICATION: The high efficacy of Sumithion has been proven during its practical use over more than two decades. Sumithion is used to eliminate insect pests in gardening (including fruit orchards), to protect cereal, vegetable and other crops, as well as to eradicate locusts and grasshoppers on fallow lands and pastures.
APPLICATION RECOMMENDATIONS: Do not apply Sumithion to cruciferous crops — this may cause phytotoxicity.
When applying to fruit crops (apple, peach, pear), a test spray should be conducted, as Sumithion may be phytotoxic to certain varieties.
Sumithion is compatible with many pesticides, except those containing alkaline components. Avoid mixing with highly alkaline substances, such as calcium polypHosphate. Mix with Bordeaux mixture immediately before spraying. Avoid mixing with propionic herbicides; do not apply Sumithion for 10 days after such herbicides have been applied, as this may cause phytotoxic effects.
ADVANTAGES OF SUMITHION:
— Broad spectrum of action
— High contact activity
— Strong stomachic action on pests
SAFETY MEASURES: Sumithion, like all insecticides of this class, can be hazardous if inhaled, ingested or contacted with the skin.
When handling the product, wear protective clothing, boots, rubber gloves or safety goggles. Do not eat, drink or smoke while working with chemicals. After finishing work, change clothes and thoroughly wash hands and face with soap and water.
The product must be stored in a cool, dry, protected from excessive heat and direct sunlight area designated for pesticide storage, protected from access by unauthorized persons, away from food, feed and drinking water.
Do not leave prepared working solutions unattended. Dispose of containers used for the product.
FIRST AID IN CASE OF POISONING: Immediately clean the skin and clothing after contact with the product. In all cases of suspected Sumithion poisoning, seek medical attention immediately. If the affected person experiences visual impairment, stomach cramps, chest heaviness — before medical help arrives, administer two tablets of atropine (0.6 mg 1/100 gram each). Place tablets in the mouth or under the tongue or between upper lip and gum. If tablets are unavailable, liquid forms (ampoules) containing an equivalent amount of atropine may be administered orally or by intramuscular injection. If medical help is delayed, repeat atropine administration every hour until help arrives. Lay the affected person down until medical help arrives. Do not neglect medical assistance.
