Description
How to identify
Liriomyza urophorina is a specialized species of leafminer fly belonging to the Agromyzidae family. The adults are tiny insects, typically measuring 2–3 mm in length, easily recognized by their distinct yellow and black coloration patterns.
The adults lead an active life and use their ovipositor to penetrate leaf tissues for feeding and laying eggs. The larvae are small, maggot-like, and pale, spending their entire development stage mining the internal tissues of the leaf.
What it damages
This pest primarily infests plants within the Asteraceae family. It poses a significant threat to various ornamental plants and flowers, particularly those grown in greenhouses and protected environments.
Damage is caused by both adults and larvae. Adults create small punctures while feeding on sap and ovipositing, while larvae cause internal damage by consuming the plant parenchyma as they tunnel through the leaf.
Signs of infestation
The primary symptom of infestation is the presence of distinct mines or tunnels, which appear as winding, light-colored tracks within the leaf tissue. As the infestation progresses, these mines merge, leading to yellowing and premature drying of the leaves.
Severely infested foliage loses its turgor and photosynthetic capacity, which stunts plant growth and reduces the quality of the crop. Tiny white spots at the puncture sites are early indicators of adult fly activity on the leaf surface.
Control measures
Effective management of Liriomyza urophorina requires an integrated approach, combining cultural practices with chemical interventions. It is crucial to remove and destroy plant debris, as it often harbors pupae that can lead to re-infestation.
Yellow sticky traps are highly recommended for monitoring the adult population and determining the timing of control efforts. When thresholds are exceeded, the application of systemic or translaminar insecticides is necessary to effectively target the larvae hidden inside the leaves.
