While they are primarily known as decomposers, certain species have been identified as pests in intensive agricultural systems, particularly in greenhouses and industrial mushroom cultivation where organic matter is abundant.

These pests target various crops, including mushrooms, vegetable seedlings, and plants grown in high-moisture environments. They are especially attracted to weakened plant tissues, compost, and soils that are poorly drained, where they thrive and multiply rapidly.

The life cycle of Sphaeroceridae is relatively short, allowing for multiple generations within a single growing season. Eggs are deposited in decaying organic matter or moist soil, and the larvae develop through several instars. The rapid turnover of these generations makes population control particularly challenging in controlled environments.

Damage to plants is primarily caused by larvae feeding on roots, stems, and germinating seeds. This feeding disrupts nutrient uptake, causing stunted growth, yellowing, and eventually plant collapse. Furthermore, adult flies act as vectors, transporting fungal spores and bacteria between plants, exacerbating the spread of diseases.

Effective management requires a combination of sanitation and chemical or biological controls. Key strategies include:
