The pea leafminer (Kleinschmidtimyia pisi) is a small dipteran insect belonging to the Agromyzidae family. Adult flies are typically dark-colored and measure about 1.5 to 3 mm in length, making them difficult to detect without careful field observation.
The life cycle begins when the female adult inserts eggs into the leaf surface. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the leaf tissue, where they spend the majority of their development stage feeding on the internal parenchyma cells.
The larvae are legless and undergo several instars while creating tunnels known as mines. Once they have completed their development, they usually pupate within the leaf mine or drop to the soil to form a puparium.
This species can produce multiple generations per season, depending on environmental factors like temperature and humidity. The population dynamics are heavily influenced by the availability of host plants and the presence of natural enemies.
Overwintering occurs primarily in the pupal stage, buried in the soil or protected within plant debris, which allows the insect to emerge early in the following spring as soon as conditions become favorable.
What it damages

The presence of small, dark fecal pellets inside the mines provides conclusive evidence of larval activity. By carefully examining these tunnels, one can often find the larvae themselves at the terminal end of the mine.
Significant infestations often result in reduced plant vigor, stunted growth, and visible wilting of the lower and middle foliage levels as the season progresses.
Control measures
