The primary hosts for these pests include various cultivated fungi, such as oyster mushrooms and agarics, as well as the root systems of ornamental plants and vegetable seedlings. The larvae, which reside within the growing substrate, are the primary cause of concern for growers, as they are capable of decimating young root tissue or entire mushroom beds if left unchecked.

The biological life cycle of Keroplatidae is moisture-dependent. Females lay batches of eggs in damp organic matter or moist soil. Upon hatching, the larvae begin feeding immediately. They progress through several instars before pupating. The rapid maturation rate in controlled greenhouse temperatures allows for overlapping generations, making it difficult to control the pest population without a strict management regime.

The damage caused by these insects is often cumulative. Feeding larvae destroy root hairs and stems, leading to stunted growth, wilting, and in severe cases, the death of the plant. In mushroom cultivation, the larvae bore into the caps and stalks, rendering the produce unmarketable. Furthermore, their presence often indicates overwatering, which exacerbates secondary bacterial and fungal infections.
