The crop originated in the Mediterranean region and parts of Europe, Asia, and North Africa. Modern commercial production is concentrated in regions with distinct seasonal changes, which are essential for the plant to enter dormancy. Today, major producing countries include China, Peru, Germany, and the United States, each optimizing cultivation for local climates.

Botanically, the plant consists of a crown—a dense network of roots—and fibrous stems known as spears. The foliage is composed of needle-like cladodes that perform photosynthesis. Because the plant is dioecious, commercial growers prefer all-male hybrid cultivars to maximize yield and uniformity in spear diameter.

Successful asparagus production requires deep, well-drained, sandy loam soils to prevent root rot and allow for easy spear emergence. The crop is highly sensitive to moisture stress and weed competition during its establishment years. Intensive management includes specialized soil ridging techniques to produce blanched (white) or green spears, depending on the market demand.

Common phytosanitary challenges include asparagus beetles, aphids, and fungal diseases such as rust (Puccinia asparagi) and crown rot. Integrated pest management (IPM) is crucial to sustain the plant's health over its long lifespan. The industry serves both fresh markets and frozen food sectors, focusing on high-quality, tender early-season shoots.
