Swallowtail butterflies

The Papilionidae family belongs to the order Lepidoptera. These iconic butterflies are globally recognized for their size and vibrant wing patterns. Swallowtail butterflies

Damage is exclusively caused by the larval stage (caterpillars). They have a strong preference for plants within the Apiaceae family, including carrot, fennel, dill, parsley, and celery. Because the larvae are voracious feeders, heavy infestations can result in the complete defoliation of plants, which severely impacts the growth of foliage and the development of quality root vegetables.

The life cycle consists of four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females deposit eggs individually on the leaves of host plants. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo five developmental stages (instars) before pupating. The species typically overwinters in the pupal stage, attaching itself to stalks or sheltered areas using a silken girdle, which allows it to survive harsh winter temperatures.

Feeding damage is characterized by large, irregular holes in leaves and the consumption of floral structures. Early-stage larvae cause minor damage, but late-instar caterpillars can consume entire leaves, leaving behind only the tough stalks and primary veins. Persistent feeding leads to stunted plant growth and reduced vigor, making the crops more susceptible to secondary infections or environmental stress.

Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the most effective approach for handling these insects. Hand-picking caterpillars is highly practical in home gardens and small plots. For larger infestations, biological insecticides containing Bacillus thuringiensis are highly effective and environmentally safe. Chemical control should be considered a last resort, strictly adhering to pre-harvest intervals to ensure safety for human consumption.
