The primary hosts for these insects are species of the genus Morus (mulberry trees). The caterpillars feed exclusively on the foliage of these plants. A severe infestation can lead to total defoliation of the host tree within a few weeks, which significantly stresses the plant, reduces fruit yield, and compromises its ability to survive winter conditions.

The life cycle follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa, and adult. Eggs are typically deposited on the branches or leaves. Upon hatching, the larvae undergo several molting stages, growing rapidly and consuming large amounts of foliage. Once fully grown, they spin a silk cocoon to protect themselves during the pupal stage, from which the adult moth eventually emerges.

The primary damage is caused by larval feeding, which leads to the skeletonization or total consumption of leaves. This severe leaf loss inhibits photosynthesis, causing the tree to suffer from nutritional deficits. In commercial setups, the presence of these larvae also necessitates strict management to prevent the spread of diseases, such as silkworm jaundice, which can be fatal to the population.

To effectively protect mulberry trees from Bombycidae infestations, the following strategies are recommended:

  • Regular field scouting to identify early egg masses or young larvae.
  • Pruning and destroying infected branches to limit the larvae spread.
  • Utilizing biological pesticides, such as Bacillus thuringiensis, which target larvae without harming the environment.
