Systematic position. The family Xyloryctidae belongs to the superfamily Gelechioidea, within the order Lepidoptera. These moths are characterized by larvae that primarily exhibit a xylophagous behavior, meaning they feed on wood, living within the stems or branches of their host plants, which provides them with a significant evolutionary advantage.

Xyloryctid moths

Host plants. These pests primarily target woody plants, including various species of trees and shrubs. Their impact is particularly noted in forestry and horticulture, where they can infest both deciduous and evergreen species. Young saplings are especially vulnerable and can suffer severe growth retardation or mortality upon infestation.

Biology and life cycle. The life cycle comprises the egg, larval, pupal, and adult stages. Adult moths are typically nocturnal. After mating, females lay eggs on the bark. Upon hatching, larvae immediately bore into the tissue. The pupation phase occurs within the galleries created by the larvae, effectively shielding them from environmental pressures and natural predators.

Damage and pest status. The damage is exclusively caused by the larval stage. By boring deep galleries into the xylem and phloem, larvae disrupt the nutrient and water transport systems of the host. The signs of infestation include:

  • Small boreholes on the trunk surface.
  • Accumulation of frass (larval excrement) at the base of the tree.
  • Wilting or chlorosis of the canopy.
If left unchecked, the damage weakens the structural integrity of the plant.

Control measures. Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is recommended to control Xyloryctidae populations. This includes maintaining optimal plant vigor through proper fertilization and watering. Mechanical control, such as pruning and removing heavily infested branches, is essential. Additionally, chemical treatments targeting the early larval stages or the use of systemic insecticides injected into the bark can be effective.
