Weevils

The damage caused by weevils varies significantly between species. Adults typically feed on leaves, buds, and flowers, often leaving characteristic notches along leaf margins. The larvae are often the most destructive stage, living inside roots, stems, seeds, or fruit, causing internal damage that leads to weakened plant structures or total loss of harvest.

The life cycle of a weevil includes four distinct stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Most weevil species overwinter as adults in protected locations such as soil debris, leaf litter, or under tree bark. Once temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge, feed, and begin the reproductive cycle, with females depositing eggs into the plant tissues they have prepared.

Economically significant species include the granary weevil, which destroys stored grain, and the cotton boll weevil, known for devastating cotton crops. These pests have high reproductive rates and are highly adaptable, which makes them a constant threat to both field crops and horticultural plants worldwide.
