Potato cyst nematode

The potato cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis) is a major soil-borne pest classified within the family Heteroderidae and the order Tylenchida. It is recognized globally as a serious quarantine pest that poses a significant threat to potato production and international trade of seed tubers.

This nematode primarily affects members of the Solanaceae family, with potato being the most significant host. Other susceptible crops include tomatoes and eggplants, as well as various wild solanaceous weeds that can act as reservoirs, allowing the pest to persist in the field even in the absence of potatoes.

The biological cycle of the nematode is highly specialized. Juveniles hatch from eggs, penetrate the roots, and establish a feeding site, causing physiological stress to the plant. Mature females eventually protrude from the root surface, swell into spherical shapes, and harden into protective cysts, each containing hundreds of eggs that can survive for many years in the soil.

The damage caused by G. rostochiensis is often hidden until the population density reaches high levels. Affected plants exhibit poor canopy growth, chlorosis, and wilting, especially under water stress. Because the root system is damaged, the plant cannot effectively absorb water and nutrients, leading to small, unmarketable tubers and significant yield losses.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling this nematode. Key strategies include:

• Planting resistant potato varieties that prevent nematode reproduction.
• Implementing long-term crop rotation with non-host crops to starve the population.
• Practicing strict hygiene to prevent the movement of infested soil between fields.
• Using trap crops or soil amendments to reduce the nematode population density.
