About product
A high-tech variety for the processing industry: from potato chips to french fries with high starch yield.
Description
Technological Potential of the Carlena Variety
Norika's German breeding programs focus on high-performance agro-types, and the "Carlena" variety is no exception. This mid-season potato (85–95 days) is engineered specifically for deep processing. Unlike table varieties, the focus here is on tuber biochemistry, which is critical for the processing industry.
Biochemical Profile and Application
A key indicator for Carlena is its high starch content (18–19%). This makes the variety an ideal raw material for the production of potato chips and french fries. The stability of dry matter in tubers weighing 50–130 grams ensures a predictable yield of the finished product and minimal fat absorption during frying. The light yellow flesh maintains its texture after dehydration, making it suitable for dried potato flakes as well.
Agrotechnical Resistance
The variety's defense system is embedded at a genetic level. The breeders focused on resistance to the most aggressive soil pathogens:
- Late Blight: high field tolerance allows for a reduction in fungicide applications.
- Nematodes: the variety is resistant to golden potato cyst nematodes (Ro1, Ro4) and root-knot nematodes, which is critical for intensive crop rotation systems.
- Soil-borne diseases: Carlena demonstrates increased resistance to common scab, rhizoctonia, and root rots. The netted skin structure and medium eye depth not only simplify mechanical peeling but also reduce the risk of secondary infections during storage.
The round-oval shape of the tuber is a standard for automated processing lines, ensuring consistent calibration and clean cutting. Carlena is, above all, about manufacturing efficiency and predictable processing economics.
