Why Sifra remains a benchmark in the table potato segment

HZPC’s Dutch breeding has brought the Sifra variety to the market—a mid-late maturing potato chosen by farmers who focus on long-term storage and premium market quality. Unlike early-maturing varieties, this hybrid requires 115–125 days to reach full maturity, resulting in a dry matter content of 20–21%. This makes the tubers firm, resistant to mechanical damage during harvesting, and ideal for culinary processing.

Agronomic foundation and crop protection

Sifra’s main advantage is its genetic 'armor.' In intensive farming, where soil-borne pathogens can destroy up to half of a crop, this variety demonstrates high resistance to three critical threats:

• Potato Cyst Nematode (Ro1, Ro4);
• Potato Wart (Synchytrium endobioticum);
• Common Scab.

These traits significantly reduce fungicide expenditures and allow for successful cultivation even in soils where other varieties would be susceptible to infection.

Practical cultivation recommendations

The round-oval shape of the tubers makes Sifra highly attractive for retail, as it is convenient for washing, grading, and peeling. However, it is important to note that the variety requires consistent irrigation during the tuber initiation phase. Due to its high flesh density, the variety tolerates long-distance transportation without losing its commercial appearance. It is an optimal choice for professional growers supplying major retail chains, where requirements for tuber appearance are strictest.
