Potato Gala

Stable Yield and Culinary Excellence

The German variety 'Gala' from Norika has firmly established itself in the table potato segment thanks to its reliability. As a mid-early variety maturing in 85–95 days, it allows farmers to precisely plan their harvest and distribution schedules. The main value for commercial farms lies in the combination of high tuber marketability and resistance to challenging soil pathogens.

Agronomy and Tuber Characteristics

Gala tubers have an attractive oval shape, yellow skin with a slightly netted texture, and shallow eyes, which significantly simplifies post-harvest handling. The weight of a commercial tuber ranges from 50 to 130 grams, serving as an ideal standard for retail and the HoReCa sector. Due to the high density of the flesh, the potatoes do not darken during mechanical harvesting and maintain excellent taste throughout long storage periods.

Defense Potential

In the field, Gala demonstrates high adaptability. The variety reliably resists key threats, reducing the need for intensive fungicide applications:

• Late Blight and Rhizoctonia: Genetic resistance simplifies the protection of the foliage.
• Nematodes and Potato Wart: Resistance to golden potato cyst nematodes and potato wart makes this variety suitable for fields with high infection pressure.
• Scab: Low susceptibility to common scab ensures the tubers maintain a premium market look even under unfavorable weather conditions.
• Viruses: Resistance to the Potato Y virus and leafroll virus helps maintain crop productivity without the need for frequent seed replacement.

Practical application of the Gala variety is aimed at commercial operations seeking uniform, high-quality potatoes with excellent culinary properties (cooking type B — low disintegration). The yellow flesh and balanced dry matter content make it a highly sought-after product for both retail chains and industrial processing.
