Potato Fabula

Technical Profile of Fabula Potato

Fabula, a potato variety from the Dutch breeder HZPC, represents a gold standard in table potato production, focusing on phytosanitary resistance and stable marketable yield. The R&D strategy of HZPC for this variety was aimed at mitigating crop risks in temperate climates through robust genetics.

Agronomic Protection and Resilience

The primary advantage of this variety is its comprehensive resistance to soil-borne pathogens. Fabula exhibits strong genetic immunity to golden potato cyst nematode (Globodera rostochiensis) and potato wart disease (Synchytrium endobioticum). For an agronomist, this means lower costs for soil fumigation and the ability to maintain successful crop rotation even in fields with a history of these infections.

Resistance to common foliage and tuber diseases is defined by:

• Late Blight: Balanced tolerance allows for efficient spray scheduling without the risk of catastrophic yield loss during early infection outbreaks.
• Common Scab: The variety shows strong resistance, which is critical for achieving a clean tuber skin texture suitable for high-end retail.
• Viral Diseases: Fabula possesses a high defense mechanism against leaf roll virus and other common viral infections, ensuring the longevity of seed stock quality.

Tuber Physics and Morphology

The morphology of Fabula is optimized for automated harvesting and long-distance logistics. The round-oval tuber shape promotes even load distribution, while the medium eye depth minimizes mechanical damage during automated washing and packaging processes. The light-yellow flesh and dense yellow skin maintain visual quality throughout the storage period, making it the preferred choice for commercial farms targeting fresh produce markets.
