Disease

Potato leafroll virus

Description

Symptoms

The primary symptom is the characteristic rolling of leaf blades upward along the central vein, which gives the plant a funnel-like or tubular appearance.

Leaves of affected plants often become stiff, brittle, and develop a leathery texture, with colors ranging from pale green to yellow or even purple, depending on the specific crop variety.

In potatoes, the infection causes yellowing of the edges of lower leaves, which eventually become fragile, while the overall growth of the bush is noticeably stunted.

In fruit trees, leaf rolling is frequently accompanied by shoot deformation, altered fruit shape, and premature leaf drop, all of which disrupt the photosynthetic process.

The systemic nature of the virus is evidenced by the fact that symptoms are most pronounced on new growth, while the overall vigor of the plant steadily declines.

Pathogen

Leaf roll virus represents a group of viral diseases caused by various phytoviruses, such as the Potato leafroll virus (PLRV). These are obligate intracellular parasites lacking cellular structure, capable of replicating only within the tissues of host plants.

Pathogens in this group exhibit high specificity and are transmitted primarily through insect vectors, most notably various species of aphids, whiteflies, or leafhoppers.

The transmission mechanism involves the virus being ingested by an insect during feeding on an infected plant, accumulating in its salivary glands, and subsequently being injected into healthy crops.

Under natural conditions, these viruses also propagate via infected planting material, such as tubers, bulbs, or vegetative propagation, if the mother plant was already infected.

This group encompasses diseases affecting a wide range of agricultural crops, including solanaceous plants, fruit trees, grapes, and various vegetables, causing systemic infection throughout the plant organism.

Conditions for development

The spread of the virus depends directly on the population of insect vectors, meaning that infection peaks typically occur during periods of active migration of aphids or other sucking insects.

High air temperatures and moderate humidity promote the rapid reproduction of these vectors, triggering mass infestations of fields during the mid-vegetation phase.

The use of infected seed material is the main factor in the accumulation of the virus on a farm, as the infection persists in tubers and is passed to the next generation.

Agronomic factors, such as the failure to control weeds that serve as virus reservoirs, create a favorable environment for the persistent presence of the infection in the agro-ecosystem.

Stress conditions, such as drought or unbalanced nutrition, make crops more susceptible to pathogens and accelerate the development of the disease.

Why it matters

The main damage caused by leaf roll virus is a sharp decline in crop yield, which can reach 50–80% in years with high vector concentrations.

Disruption of photosynthesis due to leaf deformation leads to poor development of fruits and tubers, resulting in smaller produce and loss of market quality.

Infected plants lose their natural immunity, becoming vulnerable to secondary fungal and bacterial infections, which often lead to the total collapse of the crop.

The virus significantly degrades the quality of planting material, rendering tubers or seeds unsuitable for further use due to the high viral load accumulated over the season.

In fruit orchards, the virus leads to long-term exhaustion of trees, reduction in their productive lifespan, and significant economic losses for the farming enterprise.

Protection

The foundation of protection is the use of certified, virus-free planting material, which serves as the primary barrier against the introduction of the pathogen.

Strict control over insect vector populations is necessary, employing timely insecticide treatments during critical growth stages of the crop.

It is recommended to conduct phytosanitary rogueing: the immediate removal and destruction (burning) of plants showing early signs of leaf rolling to prevent secondary spread.

Controlling weeds in fields and surrounding areas is vital, as these plants often serve as refuges for virus vectors during the off-season.

  • Use of resistant crop varieties and hybrids.
  • Spatial isolation of seed plots from commercial fields.
  • Implementation of crop rotation to break the infection cycle.
  • Regular disinfection of pruning and garden tools.
