These pests affect a wide range of agricultural crops, including potatoes, sugar beets, strawberries, and various nursery stock. By consuming the primary and secondary roots of plants, they interfere with nutrient and water uptake, which is particularly devastating for young, developing crops that lack extensive root systems.

The biological cycle of these beetles is complex and often spans several years, typically ranging from three to five years depending on the species and environmental conditions. The majority of the life cycle is spent underground, where larvae progress through several instars, moving vertically through the soil profile to avoid extreme temperatures.

The damage caused by these grubs is often identified by localized patches of wilting or dying plants in the field.
