Stink bugs

The biology of these insects is characterized by a high degree of resilience. They undergo a hemimetabolous life cycle involving eggs, nymphs (multiple instars), and adults. Overwintering typically occurs as adults in protected areas, such as leaf litter, debris, or topsoil layers. As temperatures rise in the spring, they emerge to feed and begin the reproductive cycle, depositing eggs on the underside of host plant leaves.

The primary damage caused by stink bugs results from their piercing-sucking mouthparts. They feed by inserting their needle-like stylets into plant tissues—stems, leaves, fruits, and seeds—and injecting digestive enzymes into the host. This process liquefies the plant cells for easier ingestion, which frequently causes fruit distortion, premature drop of flower buds, and physiological decay.

Key crops susceptible to infestation include cereals (wheat, barley, corn) and horticultural crops like tomatoes, peppers, and various fruit trees. For instance, the "sunn pest" group specifically targets cereal grains, severely impacting the gluten quality and rendering the harvest unsuitable for commercial baking. In vegetables, feeding activity leads to cloudy spots and unpalatable corky areas within the fruit flesh.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize population pressure. Recommended strategies include:

  • Implementing deep tillage to destroy overwintering sites in the soil.
  • Maintaining strict weed control on field perimeters to reduce alternative hosts.
  • Encouraging biological control agents, such as parasitic wasps (e.g., Trissolcus spp.).
  • Applying selective insecticides only when pest populations exceed the economic threshold.
