The damage caused by spittlebugs results from both nymphs and adults feeding on plant sap. By piercing the plant tissue, they extract vital nutrients, which frequently leads to the stunted growth of shoots, chlorosis, leaf curling, and in severe cases, the complete collapse of affected plant parts.
These pests have a very broad host range. They are commonly found on various garden crops, including strawberries, lettuce, various flowers, and ornamental shrubs. Because they feed on the phloem of the host plant, they can weaken the plant's immune system, making it more susceptible to secondary infections and diseases.
The life cycle of the spittlebug typically involves one generation per year. Eggs are laid in the late summer or autumn and overwinter on stems or within plant litter. In the spring, nymphs emerge, start feeding immediately, and begin creating their distinctive white, foamy masses that are easily visible on stems and leaf axils.
Integrated pest management is essential for successful control. Key strategies include maintaining garden hygiene to remove alternative host weeds, physical removal of spittle masses using high-pressure water sprays, and the application of appropriate insecticides if infestations reach economic thresholds. Regular monitoring is key to preventing widespread damage.
