How to identify

The black rice bug (Scotinophara obscura) belongs to the Pentatomidae family and is a significant pest of rice crops worldwide, particularly in Asia.

The adult bug is roughly 8–10 mm long with an oval-shaped body. Its color is typically dark brown or charcoal black, which provides excellent camouflage against rice stems.

They possess a piercing-sucking mouthpart, which allows them to penetrate plant stems to reach the vascular tissues where they feed on sap.

Eggs are laid in clusters, usually on the underside of leaves near the base of the plant. They are cylindrical and darken as they mature.

Nymphs undergo five developmental stages. They lack fully developed wings and often congregate in large groups near the water level of the paddy.

What it damages

Rice (Oryza sativa) is the primary host for this bug. By sucking sap from the base of the stems, they deprive the plant of vital nutrients and water.

Early-stage infestations result in wilting and yellowing of the leaves. In severe cases, the plant may exhibit stunted growth and failed tillering.

During the flowering stage, feeding activity often causes 'panicle blight,' where the panicles become white and empty, resulting in yield loss.

Infested crops often show signs of desiccation, and the overall plant health declines rapidly due to the loss of cell sap.

Furthermore, the physical wounds caused by the bugs can serve as entry points for various bacterial and fungal pathogens, complicating the recovery of the crop.

When it appears

The activity of the black rice bug is highly correlated with the irrigation cycles of paddy fields and climatic temperatures.

They are most active during the rainy season and when rice is at its most vulnerable growth stages, including tillering and grain filling.

Adults overwinter in soil cracks, debris, or under grasses surrounding the paddy fields, becoming active again when temperatures rise.

There can be multiple generations per year, with population density increasing rapidly under favorable warm and humid conditions.

They are primarily nocturnal, moving across the rice canopy at night to feed or migrate between different fields in search of host plants.

Signs of infestation

One of the most characteristic signs is the 'heartburn' effect, where the central leaf of the plant turns brown and dies while the outer leaves stay green.

Observing the base of the rice stems near the water line often reveals clusters of dark bugs that attempt to hide when disturbed.

A foul, pungent odor in the field is a common indicator of a high population density of these bugs.

Dead, dried-out patches in the middle of a paddy field are typical symptoms of an infestation that has spread across the area.

The presence of white, empty panicles at harvest time is a late-stage sign that the damage occurred during the grain-filling period.

Control measures

Water management is a key control strategy; draining the fields for short periods can expose the bugs and disrupt their life cycle.

Cleaning bunds and removing weeds around the fields helps eliminate overwintering sites, significantly reducing the initial infestation in the next season.

Farmers should monitor the population levels and apply systemic or contact insecticides only when the economic threshold is reached.

Light traps are highly effective for monitoring and managing populations as the bugs are strongly attracted to artificial light at night.

Encouraging natural predators, such as spiders, dragonflies, and various parasitoid wasps, can help keep the bug population under natural control.
