Triozids

Host plants. Triozids infest a wide variety of plants, including significant agricultural crops such as potatoes, tomatoes, and various fruit trees. Their host range is often narrow, meaning specific species are linked to particular plant families, causing targeted damage to commercial plantations.

Biology and life cycle. The development cycle consists of egg, five nymphal instars, and adult stages. Females lay eggs on young plant tissues. Many species are known for inducing gall formation on leaves, which provides a protective microenvironment for the developing nymphs against environmental factors and some pesticides.

Damage and pest significance. Both nymphs and adults feed on plant sap, leading to stunted growth, leaf curling, chlorosis, and general plant decline. Beyond direct feeding damage, their role as vectors for phytoplasmas and plant viruses is a major concern, often causing systemic diseases that result in significant economic losses.

  • Regular monitoring using yellow sticky traps to detect early infestations.
