Slug moths
These pests are generalists, feeding on a wide array of host plants including deciduous trees, fruit orchards, and ornamental shrubs. Common hosts include species of oak, maple, apple, and various citrus varieties. In certain regions, they are recognized as significant agricultural pests that can threaten the productivity of tropical plantations, such as coffee, oil palm, and tea.
The life cycle of the Limacodidae follows a complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The adult moths are generally nocturnal and inconspicuous in color, while the larvae are often vibrantly patterned. Larvae usually feed on the underside of leaves. Pupation occurs inside a tough, spherical or oval silk cocoon, which is often attached to twigs or the trunks of trees, where the insect overwinters.
The damage caused by these insects is primarily foliar. Young larvae may skeletonize leaves, while older larvae consume the entire leaf blade, leaving only the primary veins. Severe infestations lead to significant defoliation, which hampers the plant's ability to undergo photosynthesis. This stress renders trees vulnerable to secondary diseases and pests, ultimately reducing yields and growth vigor in orchards.
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is the best approach for controlling slug moth populations. Key strategies include:
- Mechanical removal of overwintering cocoons from branches.
- Monitoring for egg masses and early-stage larvae to time pesticide applications.
- Utilizing biological control agents such as predatory wasps or Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) sprays.
- Applying contact insecticides if infestation levels cross the economic threshold for damage.
