To protect their larvae, they cut precise circular or oval segments from the leaves of various plants, which they roll and use to construct individual brood cells within their nests.

The damage is characterized by clean, symmetric notches found along the margins or within the leaf blades. While this behavior rarely causes the death of the host plant, it can lead to significant defoliation in roses, strawberries, and certain legumes, reducing the plant's ability to photosynthesize effectively and lowering its visual appeal.

It is critical to distinguish between major crop pests and Apidae. Because these insects are essential for the pollination of diverse agricultural and wild crops, total eradication is not recommended. Agronomists often suggest a balanced approach that focuses on tolerance rather than the aggressive elimination of these beneficial pollinators.

Effective protection measures involve non-lethal deterrents. Covering susceptible plants with horticultural mesh during peak nesting activity is the most efficient method to prevent damage. Maintaining plant health through proper fertilization and irrigation helps the plants recover quickly from the leaf loss without the need for toxic pesticide interventions.
