Agaonidae, commonly known as fig wasps, represent a family of hymenopteran insects that share an obligatory mutualistic relationship with fig plants (Ficus). In commercial fig cultivation, these wasps can act as pests when their reproductive cycles negatively impact the yield quality of edible fig varieties.

Taxonomically, they belong to the order Hymenoptera, family Agaonidae. These insects are highly specialized, possessing unique morphological adaptations that allow them to enter the syconium (the enclosed inflorescence of the fig) to deposit their eggs and perform the essential role of pollination.
The life cycle involves female wasps entering immature figs. The larvae develop inside the floral tissues, feeding on the plant, which can result in stunted growth or premature abscission of the developing syconia. This developmental stage is strictly synchronized with the flowering phenology of the host plant.
Damage is characterized by internal tissue degradation and the formation of exit holes in mature figs, which drastically reduces market value. Furthermore, these entry and exit wounds provide direct pathways for secondary infections, such as fungal rots, which often lead to post-harvest losses.
