These pests primarily target coniferous trees. Their host range includes various members of the Cupressaceae family, such as cedars, junipers, and incense cedars. They are particularly attracted to trees that are stressed, injured, or have been recently damaged by forest fires, as these conditions provide the necessary environment for oviposition.

The biology of Anaxyelidae revolves around their xylophagous larval stage. Females lay their eggs into the bark crevices or directly into the wood of the host tree. Upon hatching, the larvae bore into the sapwood and heartwood, where they feed and develop. The larval stage is critical, as it is during this phase that the insect creates its internal protective tunnel system.

The damage caused by these insects is characterized by extensive boring tunnels within the trunk. This activity significantly degrades the quality of the timber, making it unsuitable for commercial use. Furthermore, the boring weakens the tree's structural integrity, increases its vulnerability to fungal infections, and can contribute to the eventual mortality of the infested tree.

Effective management and protection strategies are largely preventive and centered on sound silvicultural practices. Key efforts include maintaining forest hygiene by removing fire-damaged or weakened timber promptly.
