Root-knot nematode

Meloidogyne incognita

Description

Systematic position: The root-knot nematode Meloidogyne incognita belongs to the phylum Nematoda, class Chromadorea, order Tylenchida, and family Meloidogynidae. It is a microscopic obligate endoparasite that lives inside the root tissues of host plants, causing severe structural changes and interfering with plant health.

Host range: This species is a major polyphagous pest capable of infesting over 2000 plant species. It particularly threatens vegetable crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and eggplants. The nematode is a significant economic threat in greenhouses and tropical agricultural regions where temperature conditions remain favorable for its reproduction throughout the year.

Biology and life cycle: The life cycle consists of the egg stage, four larval stages, and an adult. Infective second-stage juveniles migrate through the soil and penetrate the root tips. Once inside, females become sedentary, swell into a pear-shaped form, and deposit eggs within a gelatinous matrix. The life cycle can be completed in as little as three to four weeks under optimal soil temperatures.

Damage and severity: The most characteristic symptom of Meloidogyne incognita infestation is the formation of galls (knots) on the roots. These galls disrupt the xylem and phloem, preventing proper water and nutrient uptake. Infected plants often show signs of stunting, wilting during peak heat, chlorosis, and significantly reduced yield, eventually leading to plant death.

Protection measures: Managing root-knot nematodes requires an integrated pest management (IPM) strategy:

  • Sterilization of soil through steaming or solarization to eliminate populations.
  • Utilizing resistant crop varieties that limit nematode penetration.
  • Crop rotation with non-host plants or cover crops that suppress nematode levels.
  • Application of biological control agents, such as beneficial fungi and bacteria.
  • Maintaining strict field sanitation by removing root systems after harvest.
