Thidiazuron

Thidiazuron is a chemical belonging to the urea derivative class, functioning as a highly effective plant growth regulator with strong cytokinin-like activity. Its primary biological function is to induce physiological senescence in plants.

The mechanism of action is based on stimulating the formation of an abscission layer at the base of the leaf petiole. This process causes leaves to fall off while they remain intact, which prevents leaf brittleness and reduces contamination of the harvested crop.

Unlike traditional desiccant herbicides that dehydrate tissues rapidly, thidiazuron promotes a controlled defoliation process. This ensures that the leaves drop cleanly, maintaining the quality of the fiber or harvestable product.

The substance is easily absorbed by leaves and translocated through the plant, triggering ethylene synthesis while inhibiting auxin activity. This unique mode of action allows for efficient performance even under fluctuating environmental conditions.

In addition to agricultural use, thidiazuron is utilized in tissue culture research as an exogenous growth factor to promote organogenesis, shoot regeneration, and callus growth in various plant species.

Cotton is the primary commercial target for thidiazuron application. It is used extensively to defoliate plants prior to harvest, significantly improving the operational efficiency of mechanical cotton pickers and the purity of the cotton lint.

Besides cotton, the compound is utilized in various horticultural and ornamental programs where controlled leaf abscission or growth regulation is required to facilitate harvesting or manage plant maturity.

Application rates for thidiazuron depend on crop density, physiological maturity, and weather conditions. Typically, for cotton, the dosage ranges from 0.1 to 0.3 kg of active ingredient per hectare.

Determining the correct timing for treatment is critical. Application should commence once 20% to 50% of the cotton bolls have opened to ensure maximum defoliation efficacy without negatively impacting fiber quality or seed development.

Environmental conditions play a major role in the efficacy of thidiazuron. The compound performs best when air temperatures are above 15 degrees Celsius; cooler temperatures may lead to significantly slower leaf drop responses.

Drift management is essential to prevent unintended exposure to non-target crops. Due to the high potency of thidiazuron, even minimal contact with sensitive foliage can result in premature defoliation or stunted growth.

Safety precautions during handling are necessary, including the use of appropriate personal protective equipment. Thorough cleaning of spraying equipment is required after application to prevent residual contamination of subsequent agricultural treatments.
