Calcium chloride is an inorganic compound that serves as a source of readily available calcium in agronomy. Unlike organic forms, this composition ensures a rapid plant tissue response to the element's uptake.
The substance significantly strengthens cell walls due to the involvement of calcium in the formation of calcium pectates in the middle lamellae. This enhances the overall structural integrity of plant tissues.
The mechanism of action is also linked to the regulation of cell membrane permeability. An adequate level of calcium prevents unwanted leakage of nutrients and enzymes from cells.
When used as a protective agent, calcium chloride helps plants withstand physiological stresses and fungal pathogens that penetrate weakened tissues more easily.
The calcium ion actively participates in intracellular signaling, activating plant defense systems in response to pest attacks or adverse environmental conditions.
What it targets
The main goal of its application is the prevention of physiological disorders caused by calcium deficiency, such as blossom-end rot in tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants.
The substance effectively prevents fruit cracking in stone fruits, particularly cherries, by increasing the elasticity of the fruit skin.
It is used to combat pulp browning in apples and pears during long-term storage, which significantly improves the commercial quality of the harvest.
It is used to reduce the susceptibility of vegetable crops to fungal diseases that develop against the background of tissue necrosis caused by calcium deficiency.
The use of calcium chloride contributes to improved shelf life of produce, as strong cell walls better resist bacterial decay during transportation.
Rates and timing
For foliar applications, a 0.5–1.0% aqueous solution is typically used. The concentration depends on the specific crop's sensitivity to leaf burn.
Treatments begin during the active fruit-setting period and are repeated several times at 10–14 day intervals, depending on the intensity of crop growth.
It is recommended to perform spraying during morning or evening hours at moderate temperatures to avoid rapid evaporation of the spray solution and phytotoxicity.
Monitoring the pH of the working solution is important, as excessive acidity can reduce the efficiency of calcium absorption by the leaf blade.
The total application rate should be calculated based on soil analysis data and visible symptoms of deficiency on the vegetative parts of the plants.
Restrictions
The main limitation is the risk of chemical leaf burn if the permissible solution concentration is exceeded or when working in hot, sunny weather.
Calcium chloride is incompatible with many pesticides and fertilizers containing phosphates or sulfates, as this leads to the formation of insoluble precipitates and loss of effectiveness.
Frequent use on saline soils should be avoided, as an excess of chloride anions can lead to salt accumulation in the soil exchange complex.
Manufacturer regulations regarding the number of treatments must be strictly followed to prevent the accumulation of excess chlorine in the edible part of the produce.
When handling the substance, personal protective equipment must be used, as a concentrated solution can cause irritation to the skin and mucous membranes.
