Ethylene

Description

Mode of action

Ethylene is a natural phytohormone that functions as a powerful growth regulator in professional crop production. Unlike herbicides or fungicides, its primary role is to manipulate internal physiological signals to control developmental milestones.

The mechanism of action involves triggering genetic pathways related to cell senescence and maturation. Products based on ethylene or its precursors release the active substance into plant tissues to kickstart metabolic processes.

Ethylene promotes the activation of enzymes responsible for degrading chlorophyll, converting starch into sugars, and softening cell walls. This coordinated response accelerates the ripening process, ensuring uniformity across the field.

Beyond ripening, it influences plant architecture by modifying stem elongation. By restricting internode growth, it promotes sturdier stems, which is vital for preventing lodging in cereal crops under high-input conditions.

The physiological response is strictly dose-dependent and stage-dependent. Successful application requires precise timing, as ethylene can either stimulate growth or induce abscission depending on the developmental phase of the plant.

What it targets

The primary use is focused on fruit and vegetable crops, such as tomatoes, peppers, and apples, where synchronized ripening is crucial for maximizing harvest efficiency and labor reduction during picking.

In greenhouse vegetable production, ethylene is used to promote female flower formation in cucumbers. This targeted application leads to a significant increase in the total number of fruits harvested per square meter.

Cereal crops benefit from ethylene-releasing agents to improve stem strength. By managing the growth of the straw, farmers can prevent crop lodging, ensuring better canopy management and healthier grain development.

Cotton production utilizes ethylene for leaf abscission (defoliation) prior to mechanical harvesting. Removing foliage improves the quality of the harvested fiber and increases the efficiency of harvesting machinery.

Furthermore, it is used to stimulate uniform sprouting of seed potatoes or bulb crops, which helps to optimize planting density and achieve early-season crop emergence in diverse field conditions.

Rates and timing

Application rates are strictly regulated based on the plant's growth stage. Overdosing can lead to irreversible physiological stress, tissue damage, or premature shedding of immature fruit before they reach marketable quality.

Temperature is a key factor influencing the rate of action. High temperatures amplify the response to ethylene, necessitating a reduction in dosage, while cold conditions may require more careful monitoring to ensure efficacy.

Uniform spray coverage is essential for consistent results across the field. Inadequate distribution can cause patchy ripening or uneven stem growth, which complicates mechanical operations during harvest.

Safety intervals (Pre-Harvest Intervals) must be strictly observed. This ensures that the final produce is free from unacceptable residue levels and meets international food safety standards for human consumption.

For large-scale operations, agronomists recommend conducting localized trials to determine the specific sensitivity of the cultivar, as different varieties may show varying degrees of response to hormone application.

Restrictions

The main limitation is the health of the crop. Applying ethylene to plants already suffering from drought stress or heavy disease pressure may trigger a decline in overall plant vitality and yield potential.

Varietal differences play a significant role in determining effectiveness. Certain fruit varieties may become too soft following treatment, which reduces their shelf life and ability to withstand the rigors of long-distance transport.

Operational safety measures are necessary during the preparation of working solutions. Even though ethylene is a naturally occurring compound, concentrated forms can be irritating, requiring standard personal protective equipment.

Proper storage is essential to maintain biological activity. Products must be kept in cool, dry areas away from direct sunlight, as exposure to environmental extremes can degrade the formulation and reduce its efficacy.

Waste management must comply with environmental regulations to prevent concentrated residues from entering local waterways or soil systems, ensuring sustainable farming practices and compliance with ecological standards.
