Maize is a warm-season crop, so the optimal sowing time is determined by soil temperature. Sowing should commence when the soil reaches a temperature of +10...+12°C at the seeding depth.

Depending on the climatic zone, the main sowing period usually falls between late April and mid-May. Planting in cold soil causes slow emergence and increases the risk of seed decay from fungal pathogens.

Sowing depth typically ranges from 4 to 8 cm, adjusted based on soil moisture. In moist soils, shallower planting is preferred, whereas in drier conditions, deeper planting ensures better seed-to-soil contact.

Precision planting is essential to ensure uniform plant spacing, which reduces inter-plant competition for nutrients and sunlight. Modern planters are used to achieve the desired plant density per hectare.

Rolling the soil after sowing can be beneficial in some environments as it improves capillary water movement to the seed. This practice facilitates faster and more uniform germination across the field.

Growing requirements

Maize (Zea mays L.) is an annual grass belonging to the Poaceae family, originating from Central America. It requires high temperatures and significant sunlight to reach its full grain potential.

The crop performs best in fertile, well-drained soils such as chernozems or well-managed loam soils. It prefers a soil pH near neutral and reacts negatively to extreme acidity or alkalinity.

Water management is critical, especially during the silking and grain-filling stages. Maize is highly sensitive to moisture stress during the reproductive phase, which can lead to poor fertilization and yield loss.

High yields require balanced nutrient application, primarily nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The crop has a high nutrient uptake rate during the rapid vegetative growth stage.

Maize serves diverse purposes, including food production (flour, cornmeal), industrial uses (starch, ethanol, oil), and high-quality silage for the livestock industry.

Main diseases and pests

Maize crops are vulnerable to several fungal diseases, including alternaria leaf blight, anthracnose, helminthosporium leaf spot, and common smut. These diseases can significantly reduce both grain quality and total yield.

Other common threats include rhizoctonia, sclerotinia, charcoal rot, and pythium root rot. Management relies on seed treatments, crop rotation, and the selection of disease-resistant hybrids.

Insect pests pose a major threat, with the European corn borer being one of the most destructive. Its larvae bore into stalks and ears, weakening the plant and increasing the risk of lodging.

Wireworms and false wireworms are significant pests that feed on seeds and roots, often leading to reduced stand density. Other pests such as the meadow moth, acaia pod borer, and various weevils also require regular field scouting.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential, combining cultural practices like deep plowing, the use of insecticides when thresholds are met, and habitat management to support natural predators.
