Maister 62WG, developed by Bayer CropScience AG (Frankfurt, Germany), is a systemic selective herbicide engineered to eliminate a broad spectrum of weeds in maize crops. The core of this product is its complex formulation containing foramsulfuron, iodosulfuron-methyl-sodium, and the specialized safener isoxadifen-ethyl. This chemical composition allows for the simultaneous management of annual and perennial grass and broadleaf weeds in a single post-emergence application.

The Role of the Safener

The technical standout of this formulation is the isoxadifen-ethyl safener. Maize possesses specific metabolic pathways that, when facilitated by the safener, rapidly neutralize the active ingredients within the crop's cells. This ensures that the herbicide remains lethal to weed species while the maize crop remains protected, even under fluctuating environmental conditions or growth stages where the plant might otherwise be vulnerable to sulfonylurea-based chemicals.

Mechanism of Action

The active agents work by inhibiting the acetolactate synthase (ALS) enzyme, a critical component in the biosynthesis of essential amino acids (valine and isoleucine) in target plants. Once absorbed through the leaves, the herbicide halts cellular division almost immediately:

• Necrosis: Chlorosis and eventual necrosis of sensitive weeds manifest within 7 to 10 days post-treatment.

The water-dispersible granule (WG) formulation is designed for optimal solubility and consistent coverage. With a standard application rate of 0.15 kg/ha and a strict limit of one treatment per season, it serves as a highly efficient post-emergence "insurance" policy. By acting selectively on the weed's biochemical targets, Maister 62WG ensures the maize crop can develop without nutrient competition, maintaining yield potential even in heavily infested fields.
