How to identify
The European corn borer (Ostrinia nubilalis) belongs to the order Lepidoptera and the family Crambidae. It is one of the most destructive agricultural pests worldwide.
Adult moths have a wingspan of 25–30 mm. Males are generally darker with jagged yellowish bands, while females are lighter, varying from pale yellow to tan.
The larvae are light gray to pinkish with rows of dark spots and a distinct dark stripe running along the back. Mature larvae grow up to 25 mm in length.
The species overwinters as mature larvae inside the stalks of host plants. Pupation occurs in the spring after temperatures consistently rise above +15°C.
The life cycle typically includes four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult moth, with the number of generations per year depending on the local climate.
What it damages
While corn is the primary host, this pest is highly polyphagous and attacks various crops, including sunflower, soybean, hemp, and winter rapeseed.
Additional vulnerable hosts include common vegetable crops such as onion, sugar beet, cabbage, and melon, which can suffer significant yield losses.
Larvae feed on leaves, stalks, ears, and pods. By boring into these parts, they disrupt the plant's nutrient transport and structural integrity.
Damage to the ears and fruit creates entry points for fungal diseases like Fusarium, significantly reducing grain quality and potentially increasing mycotoxin levels.

When it appears
The flight of the first-generation moths usually begins in late spring or early summer, coinciding with the rapid growth phase of host crops.
Adults are nocturnal, resting in dense vegetation during the day and becoming active at dusk to lay eggs on the undersides of leaves.
The larval stage is the most damaging, with activity peaking throughout the summer months. Multiple generations can occur in warm climates, increasing the infestation pressure.
