Symptoms
The primary symptoms of powdery mildew appear as small, loose, white fluffy spots that develop on the underside of leaves, stems, and leaf sheaths.
As the disease progresses, these spots expand and merge, forming a dense, white-to-gray powdery fungal mycelium that covers significant portions of the plant tissue.
Inside the white growth, tiny, spherical, black structures known as cleistothecia often appear, which serve as the overwintering bodies of the fungus.
Affected leaves eventually yellow, turn brown, and wither prematurely, significantly reducing the green surface area available for photosynthesis.
In cases of severe infection, the fungus can spread to the ears and glumes of the cereals, directly impacting grain development and overall yield quality.
Pathogen
The causative agent of the disease is the obligate parasitic fungus Blumeria graminis, which is highly specialized to infect specific cereal species.
