Pistachio seed wasp

The pistachio seed wasp (Eurytoma plotnikovi) is a small hymenopteran insect belonging to the Eurytomidae family. It is a specialized pest that exclusively attacks pistachio trees.

Adults are small, black wasps, usually measuring 3 to 4 mm in length. They have a shiny, metallic appearance, which makes them quite difficult to detect amidst the dense foliage of a pistachio orchard.

The female wasp is equipped with a robust ovipositor, enabling her to pierce the outer shell of young pistachio fruit and deposit eggs directly into the developing seed.

Larvae are white, legless, and have a characteristic curved shape. They are perfectly adapted to feed exclusively on the kernel of the pistachio nut, hollowing it out completely.

The pupal stage occurs inside the fruit, protecting the insect from environmental fluctuations until the next season, when it emerges as a fully developed adult wasp.

The economic impact of the pistachio seed wasp is severe, as it targets the generative organs of the tree. The primary damage is the destruction of the nut kernel.

By consuming the kernel, the larvae turn the nut into a hollow shell filled with frass, rendering the fruit completely worthless for commercial sale or human consumption.
