Host plants: These pests primarily target deciduous trees, including birch, alder, maple, willow, and linden. They are generally opportunistic, choosing trees that are already stressed by drought, competition, or mechanical damage, although they also infest logs or timber left in the forest.

Biology and life cycle: Adult females use a specialized ovipositor to deposit eggs deep into the wood of the host tree. Upon hatching, the larvae tunnel through the timber. Unlike many other xylophagous insects, wood wasp larvae rely on symbiotic fungi to break down the wood fibers, which they introduce into their tunnels during the egg-laying process.

Damage and economic importance: Larval feeding creates complex gallery systems within the wood, which compromise the structural integrity of the timber and lower its commercial value. The presence of these pests is often marked by characteristic circular exit holes on the bark, through which adults emerge after pupation.
