The adult female possesses a specialized ovipositor, which is used to penetrate the developing pistachio fruit and deposit eggs inside the seed. This behavior enables the larvae to feed safely within the endocarp of the developing nut.
The larvae of this species are apodous (legless) and white, perfectly adapted to a sedentary lifestyle within the confines of the pistachio kernel. Their development is entirely protected from external environmental factors.
This pest is monovoltine, meaning it completes only one generation per year. The biological cycle is strictly synchronized with the phenology of the pistachio tree, ensuring that the emergence of adults coincides with the development of the fruit.
