How to identify

The pistachio wasp (Eurytoma boucekia) is a small hymenopteran insect belonging to the family Eurytomidae. It is a highly specialized pest that exclusively targets pistachio trees (Pistacia vera).

The adult wasps are very small, typically measuring 3–4 mm in length. They possess a dark, metallic-colored body, which allows them to remain hidden among the leaves and branches of the trees.

Identification is difficult due to the cryptic behavior of the adults. The larvae are cream-colored, legless grubs that spend their entire development cycle hidden deep within the pistachio seed.

Because the larvae are encased within the hard shell of the nut, they are protected from external environmental factors and are shielded from many contact-based predators and pesticides.

Detection is usually carried out by inspecting the orchard for signs of premature fruit drop or by conducting laboratory analysis of harvested nuts to check for internal larval infestation.

What it damages

The primary damage is caused by the larvae feeding on the kernel of the pistachio nut. This results in the complete destruction of the kernel, rendering the fruit unmarketable.

The female wasp uses its ovipositor to inject eggs directly into the developing fruit when the shell is still soft. This timing is critical for the survival of the offspring.

As the larva matures, it hollows out the nut from the inside, leaving only a thin shell. This significantly reduces both the yield weight and the quality of the harvest.

Severely infested nuts may wither or drop from the tree prematurely. If the infestation is widespread, the total annual yield can be reduced by more than 50–70%.

Beyond the loss of harvest, the presence of these pests creates a major phytosanitary issue, as the infested nuts serve as the primary source for the next generation of the population.

When it appears

The lifecycle of the pistachio wasp is synchronized with the fruit development of the host plant. The wasp typically overwinters as a diapausing larva inside the infested, dried-out nuts.

In spring, as the temperatures rise, the larvae pupate inside the nuts. Soon after, the adult wasps emerge, matching the period when the pistachio tree is setting its young fruit.

There can be one or more generations per year depending on the regional climate. In warmer climates, the development cycle is faster, leading to a higher pressure on the fruit production.

The adult emergence period lasts several weeks. During this time, the wasps are actively searching for suitable young pistachios to oviposit into, ensuring their next generation survives.

By late summer and autumn, the final generation of larvae reaches maturity inside the nuts and enters the winter dormancy phase, ready to restart the cycle the following spring.

Signs of infestation

Symptoms of an infestation are often subtle until the damage is already extensive. The most common sign is the presence of small, circular exit holes on the surface of the nut shell.

These holes are created by the adult wasps as they emerge from the nut after completing their metamorphosis. Seeing these holes is a clear indicator of a recent infestation cycle.

  • Premature fruit drop during the growing season.
  • Hollow kernels discovered during processing or cracking.
  • Circular exit holes (approx. 1 mm) on the surface of the shell.
  • Reduced yield density and weight in affected blocks.

Field scouting should focus on identifying early-stage fruit drop and examining discarded nuts to look for the characteristic larval tunnels inside the shell.

Control measures

The most effective management strategy is sanitation. All infested nuts, including those remaining on the trees (mummies) and those on the ground, must be gathered and destroyed.

Mechanical orchard floor management, such as tilling, can help disrupt the lifecycle by burying infested nuts, preventing the adult wasps from successfully emerging in the spring.

Chemical control must be timed precisely to coincide with the adult emergence phase. Systemic insecticides are generally preferred as they provide a barrier during the vulnerable egg-laying stage.

Using yellow sticky traps is a recommended monitoring technique. By tracking the number of wasps caught, growers can determine the optimal timing for insecticide applications.

Integrated pest management (IPM) practices, including the preservation of natural parasitoids that hunt these wasps, are essential to maintaining long-term population control in pistachio orchards.
